Distant Thoughts
Science / technology utilized: Findings on 3D printable ventilators and model samples
The artist Miki Maaya creates works that transform events she has personally experienced into new forms, choosing different media and presentation methods for each work. For example, in past works dealing with the deaths of loved ones and the experiences of people unable to return home on the night of the Great East Japan Earthquake of March 2011, Miki seems to engage with events having meanings that cannot or should not be easily digested, as if testing these things’ weight with her own hands, and to encourage viewers to share in these events.
Miki’s creative stance is maintained in the current work as well, for which she collaborated with Ishikita Naoyuki of NHO Niigata Hospital’s Division of Medical Device Innovation. Ishikita has been involved in development of many innovative medical devices in addition to his clinical practice, and is currently working on the COVID Ventilator Project, the goal of which is practical application of a ventilator that can be manufactured with a 3D printer. Having confirmed that a 3D printer at the International Space Station is capable of printing a ventilator, Ishikita has secured the cooperation of non-expert volunteers and is moving forward with clinical research aimed at securing medical approval for the device. For this collaboration with Miki, the project provided findings on the 3D printable ventilator, model samples produced by Ishikita himself, and ventilators made by project volunteers.
In the gallery, ventilators made by project volunteers are arrayed on the wall along with 18 objects assembled from ventilators and whistles. When air is conveyed to each of these, a silicone rubber artificial lung operates and exhales air through the ventilator, causing a whistle to blow. One by one the pieces begin to sound, as if urging one another to join in, and after all have harmonized together in a chord they fall silent.
What does the viewer derive from this work, the title of which is an ancient Japanese phrase referring to natural evocation of distant things? On the one hand, we are reminded of the strength of will and intellectual power to pursue development of a 3D printable ventilator that can be manufactured and used anywhere, including outer space, and on the other we are struck by the imagination of an artist who seeks to restore the act of breathing, essential to life, amid a society at the mercy of a new and deadly virus. The two of these harmonize in a “timbre of breath” that continues to resonate in the gallery with deep solemnity.
